Teaching

Smithcraft offers a range of faceting courses and tuition which can be customised to individual needs. The courses are held in our comfortable, heated workshop which has disabled access and toilet facilities. Students will use Fac-Ette precision faceting machines.

Courses

These courses can be tailored for individual one to one tuition or for small groups, for someone who has never cut a stone before to more experienced cutters who want to use their own machines or how to use new ones. We have had students from Mozambique, The Gold Coast of Africa, USA, Canada, Scotland, and throughout England. The courses range from one to five day in length depending on individual requirements, covering the following areas:

  • Health and Safety
  • Gemmology
  • Types and uses of Faceting machines
  • Designs
  • Cad programs
  • Cutting your first stone (2 day course) in Citrine (supplied).Cutting 3 stones in 2 different materials (Quartz and Topaz) and designs (5 day course)
  • Further information and progression
  • Gemstone appreciation

Refreshments, biscuits and lunch on all days is included (please let me know if you have any food requirements).

Obviously more in depth information will given during the longer courses:
Individual tuition in Gemcad design is also available, to learn how to manipulate existing designs to the gem material being cut in order to obtain its maximum brilliance or effect. We work with a world renowned gemstone designer and have the skill and knowledge of using this program to enhance not only how gemstones are cut, but also to improve the cutting standards.

In addition to our own courses Stephen Smith has previously designed and run the only accredited faceting course in the UK. In conjunction with Gosforth High School Adult Education and the North East Open College Network (NEOCN), the GNVQ level 1 and level 2 courses in Faceting produced faceting qualifications and a teaching standard which has yet to be reproduced in the UK. More recently a course was set up with the department for jewellery design of Sunderland University, an internationally recognised institution offering a high standard of work. This course was to educate some of the course’s students on how gemstones are faceted and educate them further in gemstones and geology so that they can better understand the materials they use in creating their work, Stephen Smith was a guest lecturer for this course.

Mentoring and problem solving

An integral part of Smithcraft’s teaching is to help facetors in the UK solve any problems they encounter with their equipment or cutting techniques. Stephen Smith is a founder member, has served as education officer and currently acts as a mentor for a Guild of gemstone cutters in the UK.
